I have recently encountered a situation where one my MUI programs
(self-authored) crashed horribly whenever I tried to run PSI out of its MUI
prefs.

In the end I discovered that it was a stack problem. Increasing the stack
on the application solved all configuration hassles.

You symptoms _may_ indicate a similar cause -- might be worth a try.
